Bear is getting VERY good about staying quiet outdoors at night. Being a Great Pyrenees, he prefers cooler temperatures, and I learned early on that he preferred to sleep outside. But once he reached Barking Age, I found that he would keep everyone in the neighborhood awake all night if given the chance. So, he’s been forced to sleep indoors for quite some time now. But every so often, he convinces me that he NEEDS to go out during the wee hours. When he does, I stand ready, prepared to rush him back inside at the first sign of barking. Lately, he has been going for periods of an hour or more with no barking. (I do eventually bring him back in when I decide I’m ready to go back to sleep.) As he continues to demonstrate his ability and willingness to remain quiet outdoors in the night, I feel like I should start letting him stay out all night, as I did during the pre-barking days. The problem is, I know he will start barking at some point, and I worry about how early that might be. Maybe I should just buy an entire town in the Rockies. Aspen would be nice.
