Today, I learned that Napoleon XIV (Jerry Samuels) – the guy who made the song “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!” – died a few weeks ago. From Parkinson’s, no less. For those who aren’t familiar, the song was his only hit, reaching #3 on the charts in 1966. Thirty years later, he released a new album called, The Second Coming”. At this point in my life, I was listening to the Doctor Demento Show religiously, and when I heard the good doctor talking about this new album, I had to go out and buy it! (Remember when we had to “go out and buy” music?) There are 21 tracks on the album, including multiple re-hashes of “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!” Nearly all of the songs have a psychiatric theme. By far, my favorite is “I Live in a Split Level Head”, which absolutely REQUIRES headphones or earbuds to get the full effect. You’ll thank me after you recover.
