OK, here’s some weirdness that’s come up recently. It seems that lately I only get a good night’s sleep on nights that I drink alcohol. Conventional wisdom and personal experience both tell me that this is the opposite of reality. Unless you drink enough to cause an alcohol-induced coma, alcohol may help you to fall asleep, but the resulting sleep isn’t a deep sleep. Over the last few years, I’ve definitely experienced a more fitful sleep (and fewer total hours of sleep) when I’ve had booze. But the last few weeks seem to be presenting a different story. For example, last night I had two hard ciders over the course of about 5.5 hours, and went to sleep at 1:15 AM. On other recent nights when I had no booze and went to bed around that time, I’ve been kept awake (or repeatedly awakened) by Restless Arm Syndrome, and I’ve generally been awake “for good” no later than about 7:30 AM. But last night’s sleep was excellent – I didn’t wake up at all during the night, and when I finally woke up in the morning, it was 9:20 AM. I don’t know what surprised me more: the fact that I am even capable of sleeping that late, or the fact that my dog allowed me to sleep that late!
All that said, alcohol does tend to mess with my GoCovri’s time-release mechanism, so every day either:
- I slept well, but the GoCovri isn’t working, OR
- I’m pooped due to lack of sleep.
And when I’m pooped, I feel like crap (har har har).
On a seemingly unrelated note, I just learned that Gary Wright (the man behind the 1970’s hit song “Dream Weaver”) was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and that he just died. *sigh*
