Sawhill Ponds (March 2012)

It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a ThrowBack Thursday around here. What say we do one right about now? Well, all right then! Let us voyage back twelve years, to early March of 2012, to a place on the eastern edge of Boulder, Colorado. A place called Sawhill (not Sawmill) Ponds. Before I deliver the goods, allow me to share a note I made at the time:

This is not my usual subject matter; these pics were taken on the plains rather than in the mountains. That combined with the fact that I’ve been attending various photography exhibitions recently, inspired me to try some experimental approaches that I’ve not really done before.

As an example, below is the first image I took on this day. I always try to take a picture of a sign before I enter an area and start photographing, as kind of a temporary “title page” until I’ve built a folder structure for the day’s pics. But I liked the reflection in this one, so I kept it.

But don’t worry. I’m leaving out all the really bad ones. Check out all this decentness:

I like the color contrast on this one more than I like the overall scene.
Fun with dark water and light plants. Might be cool in black & white.
The Lone Mullein (scientific name: Verbascum thapsus)
I believe that plant in the foreground is Russian Thistle. Prove me wrong.
Scientific name: Invacious paininassus
Fungus growing on a tree is a relatively rare find out here.
But in NC, a tree with only this much fungus is quite healthy.
Another lone mullein plant – and it sees its shadow!
