Flying Will Be Different This Time

A day and a half from this instant, I will be in the air again. The airport experience should be a bit different this time. It’ll be my first time flying with velcro shoes, so the security line would probably be easier than it typically has been in the past as I have an amazing tendency to get my shoelaces into horrific knots when I’m trying to take them off for airport security. I say “would” be easier, because I don’t think I’ll have to remove my shoes at all, as this will also be my first flight with TSA Pre-Check status. Finally, this will be my first trip without eyeglasses or contact lenses since I was in 5th grade! I feel like I should go to a waterpark. But I’ll be going to a pair of national lakeshores, so I’ll make do with them.

Speaking of my new eyeballs, my distance vision is great, my up-close vision is gradually getting better, and middle-distance vision is pretty dang good. But now I’m experiencing “phantom eyewear”. When I get into bed (and at other times throughout the day), I try to take my glasses off only to find they aren’t on me. Other times (usually when I’m just waking up) I’ll start trying to find my glasses, only to realize I can already see perfectly well and don’t need the glasses. The weirdest part is, I keep getting the feeling I’m wearing contact lenses, which I haven’t worn in 20 years!

Right now, it’s 9 PM, which is time to make dinner. The next time you hear from me, I should be in the Motor Suburbs.
