Maryland 2025 Trip Report (Days 2 and 3)

Day 2:

One of the items that was on my list of things to do in Maryland was to drive the Harriett Tubman Underground Railway Byway. To me, beginning this trek at the nearby Harriett Tubman Museum seemed sensible.

Now, I already knew Harriet Tubman was an amazing person. After spending the bulk of the day at this museum, I have to say that she was an utter Bad-Ass! Getting oneself safely through the Underground Railroad was a monumental task. Here’s a woman who escaped to freedom, then decided she had to risk that freedom to go back and lead others to their freedom. Not just once. Not just twice. She ventured back into the slave states THIRTEEN times, rescuing around SEVENTY human beings from slavery!

Then, during the Civil War, she went to work for the Union Army. Again, she risked her life, her freedom, and her etc. This time, she was assigned to infiltrate slave populations at plantations still controlled by the Confederacy. After infiltrating, she would convince some of the enslaved to escape with her to Union Army encampments. At first, these escapees were employed as laborers, cooks, or other roles supporting the soldiers. Eventually, the Army permitted these escaped slaves to become soldiers themselves.

This museum covers many other amazing stories of Harriett Tubman, too many to get into here. It ended up consuming my whole day; thus, I did not have time to drive the Harriett Tubman Underground Railway Byway. Seriously, check this place out if you’re ever on DelMarVa.

Day 3:

On Day 3, I went to see the fabled wild horses of Assateague Island. Or is it the wild asses of Horseateague Island? Or the horse’s ass of Wildateague Island? In any case, I saw only a few horses, and most of them from a distance. So, I didn’t get many horse pictures, but I went on a few short hikes that resulted in some pretty cool pics. Let’s start with some water boids:

After observing the birds in the bays, I headed towards the “forested” interior of the island. Here, I found dead trees and a wild horse with a very itchy butt…

Finally, I made my way to the ocean-facing side of the island, also known as the beach. It was a windy day, which made for some BIG rolling waves. I tried to get some photos of these waves, and some more gull pics as well…

Tomorrow, I will come back to the beach. Mebbe I’ll get et by a shark. There’s only one way to find out.
